Learning & Work Research Group

From early childhood to adulthood, individuals' learning and employment outcomes are influenced by many factors, including their local environments, educational and workplace institutions, teachers' and employers' expectations, societal structures, and individual differences in social cognition.

 

Faculty in this group pursue research investigating the causes of group differences in learning and in the workplace, as well as individual and group differences in social cognition and linguistics.

Examples of research projects include the following:

  • Examining the impact of societal stereotypes on students' learning, persistence, and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
  • Identifying the costs to companies of workplace discrimination
  • Discovering speech melodies in African American English
  • Assessing risk and individual differences in learning to drive among adolescents with ADHD
  • Determining the accuracy of teachers' perceptions of students' behavior and if accuracy is influenced by student race
  • Examining the diversity of large global corporations, think tanks and a variety of international organizations

This research group meets once a month and is open to faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff from the Five Colleges whose work touches on diversity and equity in learning.
