Health Research Group

Health, both physical and mental, is influenced by a range of factors including access to healthy nutrition, physical activity, quality of one's local environment, family relationships, as well as the larger sociological, economic, and historic structure within which individuals are immersed.

 

Faculty in the group on health pursue research investigating the causes of group differences in health, their consequences, and interventions that promote health and reduce group disparities.

Examples of research projects include the following:

  • Racial & ethnic disparities among care for nursing home residents with Alzheimer's
  • How chronic stress related to policing discrimination impacts Black health
  • Improving medical decision-making for patients with mental illness
  • Sexual orientation differences in menopause timing and symptoms
  • Impact of physical activity on diabetes in Hispanic women
  • Improving patient access to healthcare providers and resources among vulnerable low income populations

This research group meets once a month and is open to faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff from the Five Colleges whose work touches on diversity and equity in health.
