Showing Up with Asian and Asian American Folks: A Community Forum and Dialogue on Building Solidarity

April 5, 2021 at 6:00PM

There has been a growing wave of incidents of racial, misogynistic, and xenophobic violence against Asians and Asian Americans. The targeted mass killing of Asian women and two other people in Atlanta, Georgia, has horrified the world and calls us to take a stand. As our Chancellor stated, “We condemn, in the strongest terms, hate and intolerance in all its forms and stand in solidarity with Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander members of our community.” Let’s come together as a community. to discuss how to build a more inclusive and just campus
community.

MORE INFORMATION

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been countless incidents of racist, misogynistic, and xenophobic harassment, bullying, verbal assault, and violence against Asians and Asian Americans.  With the latest spike of anti-Asian hate and especially in the aftermath of six Asian American women and two white victims in Atlanta on March 26, the need to understand the causes and history of this anti-Asian hate and to support the Asian and Asian American community is greater than ever.

We invite the UMass Amherst community to this "Showing Up with Asian and Asian American Folks: A Community Forum and Dialogue on Building Solidarity" event on Monday, April 5, 2021 from 6:00 pm-7:30pm to discuss how to build a more inclusive and just campus community and to affirm our Chancellor's statement that "we condemn, in the strongest terms, hate and intolerance in all its forms and stand in solidarity with Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander members of our community."

This is a student-centered event that is limited to members of the UMass community. Faculty, students, and staff are all welcome. Look for upcoming events for the broader Amherst community to engage in this discussion.
