Learning Specialists are graduate students or professional staff trained to utilize the most up-to-date learning skills, tools and tactics available to assist in the acquisition of skills and knowledge. They provide individualized instruction for students with information processing disabilities. Learning Specialists use specific teaching modalities that incorporate the needs of students with disabilities and take into consideration the specific strengths and weaknesses of diverse learners. Specialties include organization, time management and study skills.
Learning Specialists are an accommodation. The program is designed for Learning Specialists to work with students or employees for a distinct amount of time for support and training so more support can be offered to those who need it. Students requesting use of the program should complete a Learning Specialist Intake form, available from their Access Coordinator.
In Spring 2017 we pioneered a tiered approach to Learning Specialist access in an effort to provide the appropriate level of service for students. The goal of the LS program is for students to learn skills and incorporate those skills as they progress through their educational experience. Therefore, based upon a student's experience, documented need and exposure to skill building through the program, eligible students will be offered appointments based upon their defined tier.
- Tier A students may schedule one weekly appointment with a Learning Specialist.
- Tier B students will be eligible for one appointment every other week with a Learning Specialist.
- Tier C students will be eligible for one monthly appointment with a Learning Specialist.
