Reginald “Reg” Andrade, Access Specialist for Disability Services, was recently appointed to serve a three-year term on the Town of Amherst’s Commission for Persons with Disabilities.
The mission of the Commission for Persons with Disabilities (CPD) is to foster equal access to life and activities for people with disabilities. Through education and advocacy, the CPD shall work to raise awareness about the needs of people with disabilities and the importance of increased accessibility to programs, housing, and facilities in municipal and commercial buildings and other public spaces. Established in 2025, the CPD was formerly known as the Disability Access Advisory Committee.
When asked why he wanted to get involved with local government, Reg said:
It affects my day-to-day life. For example, when I am unhappy with the town’s transportation system, when the town streets have potholes that need fixing, when the streetlights need to be installed in my neighborhood --- all of these issues are handled at the town level.
Reg has lived in Amherst and worked for UMass Disability Services since 2004.
The Commission for Persons with Disabilities meetings are open to the public and are generally scheduled from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm on the second Tuesday of each month, unless noted. Meetings are posted at least 48 hours in advance. Please check the Town calendar for the date and time of the next meeting.
