AAA Creative Writing Workshop
The UMass Alliance Against Ableism (AAA) has a Creative Writing Workshop, which is an opportunity to explore your disability identity through writing! You don’t have to consider yourself a writer to join, all are welcome. The group will read short works by disabled writers, respond to writing prompts, and have free-writing time. The workshop is weekly, hybrid (i.e. in-person and virtual), and open to students, faculty, and staff.
Out of the Archives: Reflections on Disabled Pasts, Presents, and Futures
The AAA Creative Writing Workshop is creating a zine of creative writing by people with disabilities in the broader UMass community. Members of the UMass community (students, faculty, staff) are invited to contribute to the zine by submitting a piece of short writing, art, or a multimedia work. (Unfamiliar with zines? Here is some background and examples from Cornell University’s archives).
The theme of this zine is Out of the Archives: Reflections on Disabled Pasts, Presents, and Futures. The workshop has drawn inspiration from the digitized collections on disability history at the UMass Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA), but contributors are welcome to interpret this theme loosely. The AAA has compiled a folder of writing prompts, short readings, and SCUA resources over the last semester.
Submissions will be open through Sunday, August 3.
