Kristen Shahverdian

The Future of Higher Education with Kristen Shahverdian

With over two dozen executive orders issued since the start of the new administration, colleges and universities across the country are facing a period of significant transition. These policies have far-reaching implications for international students and scholars, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, Title IX and gender-related policies, Title VI, sustainability initiatives, research funding, and more. As higher education navigates these shifts, many are left with pressing questions and concerns about the future.

This timely and thought-provoking symposium examined the impact of these policy changes on higher education. Attendees heard directly from national and campus leaders as they shared insights on these evolving challenges and discussed how UMass Amherst is preparing for the future. This event offered a unique opportunity to stay informed and gain a deeper understanding of the shifting landscape of higher education.

The symposium featured a keynote address by Kristen Shahverdian of PEN America, and a Q&A session led by David Mednicoff, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Middle Eastern Studies and Public Policy.  It was followed by a panel discussion with UMass Amherst leadership, moderated by Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion, Marsha McGriff

This event took place on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 from 9:30am to 12pm in the Student Union Ballroom and was open to all UMass and community members.

Deeper Dish Conversations

As a part of the CDD's "Third Way Forward" programming, the CDD held bi-monthly discussion spaces intended for students, but open to all. These discussions over dinner provide an opportunity for students to dive deep and in dialogue around issues that might divide us. Join us over a meal for a student-centered dialogue.

Hosted by the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Advocacy Inclusion & Support Programs, and The Third Way Forward.
