The Cinema of East Germany: The View from North America

From October 1-5, 1997, the DEFA Film Library hosted the first North American conference, The Cinema of East Germany: The View from North America, at Smith College in Northampton, MA, attended by 85 scholars from eight countries. These early conferences would later develop into the biennial Summer Film Institutes. Selected papers from the conference were published in the journal New German Critique.
