DEFA Live 7 with Brenda Akele Jorde

Join us for DEFA LIVE 7 with Ghanian German documentary filmmaker and scriptwriter Brenda Akele Jorde on our Instagram @defafilmlibraryamherst on May15th at 11 am (ET)!

Brenda Akele Jorde will join Mariana Ivanova (DEFA Film Library) in a conversation about her award-winning 2022 film The Homes We Carry. They will discuss the director’s experiences of traveling to and shooting the film in Mozambique and her thoughts about Afro-German communities and their histories and experiences in Germany.

The Homes We Carry focuses on a family that was deeply impacted by the history of Mozambican contract workers in East Germany. Themes of home, belonging and identity come to the fore in this film, which was screened at our 2023 Summer Film Institute.

The film is available for DSL rights and for educational rental and streaming from us. Starting on May 21, the film will be also streamed worldwide on Kanopy.com
