We are pleased to announce the publication of the first volume of our new book series on Film and the Global Cold War! 

Screened Encounters: The Leipzig Documentary Film Festival, 1955–1990, by historian Caroline Moine, recounts the political and artistic cross-fertilization that took place at this key film festival, laying to rest once and for all the idea that the Iron Curtain was impermeable. This readable volume intertwines the Cold War histories of the GDR, the world and documentary filmmaking with the stories of individual actors and artists—creating a rich, multidimensional picture of evolutions and events often considered unrelated.

The Film and the Global Cold War book series is a collaboration between the DEFA Film Library and Berghahn Books and is supported by the DEFA Foundation and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at UMass Amherst.
