Friedrich, Lothar
Biography:
Lothar Friedrich, born in Zwickau in 1934, apprenticed as a reproduction photographer and graduated from the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig in 1958. He started his career at the DEFA Studio for Animation Films the same year, first working as an inbetweener before he became an assistant main inbetweener. In 1968, he switched to the position of an animator and starting in 1969, he directed advertising and industrial films commissioned by television.
From 1972 until the closure of the studio, Friedrich worked as a director, animator, and designer. His work includes short artists’ portraits or films about well-known paintings that DEFA produced for East German television as well as cartoons for which Friedrich also wrote the scripts and did the animation, sometimes the design. His cartoons deal with human behavior (Der Hindernisläufer, 1979-81) or with environmental issues (Die Raupe, 1986; …und bedenkt das Ende, 1981-83).
Lothar Friedrich died in 1990.
