Biography:

Heinz Nagel was born on October 26, 1936 in Jävenitz. He studied at the Prague Film School FAMU from 1960-63 and graduated with a diploma in animation film. After his graduation and being influenced by the rich Czechoslovacian animation traditions, he joined the DEFA Studio for Animation Films. He worked there as an animator, scriptwriter, director of photography, and director, until the studios closed at the beginning of the 1990s.

Nagel worked in all different animation techniques from cartoon, puppet animation, silhouette animation, to cutout animation, creating over 20 animation films for children and adult audiences.

His 1964 debut as a director, the colorful silhouette film Vom Fröschlein und seinem Reifen, about a little frog who circumvents the danger of the stork, was an official selection of the 1965 Annecy Animation Film Festival and also screened in the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival Generation program.

Heinz Nagel also made one of the studio's few abstract animated films. In his 4-part series Musical Arabesques (1979-82), Nagel impressively visualized music—from classical music to jazz—using animation. This series of experimental films followed the tradition of German trick classics by the likes of Oskar Fischinger and Walther Ruttmann. Nagel found a small, committed circle of fans, but was rather neglected when it came to theatrical distribution because these films did not correspond to conventional viewing habits.

Nagel’s very last DEFA production, the cutout gem 100 Jahre Kino (1989), is a tribute to the famous film artist Charlie Chaplin: typical characteristics of Chaplin appear and combine themselves to make a portrait of the icon of cinema.
