Hempel, Rainer

Biography:

Born in 1954 in Dresden, Rainer Hempel originally trained and worked as a retoucher at a large print shop as an apprentice in his youth, but his inclination was more in the realm of graphic arts. He studied painting and graphic arts at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Dresden between 1975 and 1980. He caught the attention of the school’s Rector, Gerhard Kettner, and studied under him as a Master Pupil for an additional two years after receiving his diploma. He worked on a freelance basis for the DEFA Studio for Animation Films between 1982 and 1990 as a director and designer. As a director, he made his own distinctive mark on the Eureka! series of short educational films with Eureka! The Egg (1986), showing his unique directorial approach to collage animation. After the dissolution of the DEFA Studios, he has continued to work on a freelance basis as a graphic designer, painter, and visual artist. He lives and works in Dresden-Hellerau, where he creates, sells and exhibits his art, from lithography to painting.
