Biography:

Rainer Schade, a painter, graphic artist and cartoonist, was born in Leipzig, East Germany, in 1951. After graduating from high school, he began an apprenticeship as an offset printer.

From 1971 to 1976, he studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig before he became a master student with Stanisław Fiałkowski at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lódz, Poland. He also taught graphic art and painting at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule in Halle from 1979 to 1992. Since 1992, he has worked as part of the art faculty at the same academy.

Since 1976, he has freelanced in the fields of public art, concept development, consulting, free graphics, and illustration. Schade’s works have been exhibited in Germany and abroad.

Sitis (1989) was Schade’s only film he directed, scripted and sketched at the DEFA Studio for Animation Films. The short animation film that shows Schade’s artistic formal language was screened at the 2009 DOK Leipzig.
