Sass, Katrin

Katrin Sass was born on October 23, 1956 in Schwerin, East Germany, and studied acting in Rostock. She started acting at the Schwerin Theater, before moving on to the Landestheater in Halle and the Theaterbühne in Leipzig.

While she was still a student, Sass was chosen to play the lead role of Sonya in Heiner Carow’s Bis daß der Tod euch scheidet. This popular hit film brought her immediate fame in East Germany.

She became internationally known after playing the role of Nina Kern, a single mother fighting for custody of her three children, in Herrmann Zschoche’s Bürgschaft für ein Jahr. This role also won her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival. Sass subsequently appeared on television in Der Staatsanwalt hat das Wort and as Detective Tanja Voigt in Polizeiruf 110 in the 1990s.

Sass experienced a major comeback on the big screen when she played the lead in Michael Klier’s Heidi M., for which she received the German Film Prize and the German Film Critics’ Critics Prize.
