Biography:
Simone Frost was born on April 22, 1958 in East Berlin. At the age of six, she played small parts in the Three Penny Opera at the famous Berliner Ensemble. Three years later, Manfred Karge and Wolfgang Langhoff cast her in the title role of the televised version of Bertolt Brecht’s Die Gesichter der Simone Marchand. When she was sixteen, she played in Ibsen’s Vildanden (The Wild Duck) at the Volksbühne in Berlin. Frost then studied acting at the Ernst Busch Academy of Performing Art in Berlin and took private lessons with Doris Thalmer, the famous Weimar era actress.
Frost divided her career between theater and film. On stage, she mainly played leading roles at the Berliner Ensemble, including Virginia in Brecht’s Galileo and Ariel in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Parisian audiences celebrated her as Saint-Exupèry’s Little Prince during the Berliner Ensemble’s 1983 tour. Frost was a Berliner Ensemble member for over three decades. At the end of the 1980s, she and her husband, director Hans-Joachim Frank, founded theater 89 in Berlin, where she worked as an actress and director.
In the mid-1970s, Frost joined the ensemble of the DEFA Studio for Feature Films, where she notably acted in Egon Günther’s Goethe adaptation, Die Leiden des jungen Werthers. Her most important cinematic role was as Franziska, the rebellious young architect in Lothar Warneke’s Our Short Life. From 1999 to 2005, she also played nurse Sybille in over hundred episodes of the TV series Schloss Einstein.
Simone Frost, who also taught at the School for Performing Arts in Berlin, died of cancer in Berlin on October 14, 2009.
