André Hennicke was born in Steinheidel-Erlabrunn, East Germany, on September 21, 1958. He studied acting at the Academy for Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg from 1980 to 1984. After acting on stage at the Theater Senftenberg for several years, he turned his attention to acting in cinema and television films.
Hennicke’s film career began at the East German DEFA studio. His reputation spread beyond Germany in 1988, when he was acclaimed for his performance in Die Schauspielerin (dir. Siegfried Kühn), in which he plays a Jewish actor in Nazi-Germany. He has been cast in over one hundred roles and acted in many award-winning films, such as Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth without Youth. Other notable roles have included an SS general in the Oscar-nominated Der Untergang (dir. Hennicke has worked with many other important directors as well, including Rainer Kaufmann, Werner Herzog, Christian Petzold, and Oskar Röhler.
In addition to acting, Hennicke has worked as a producer (Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, 1997, dir.
