Biography:
Irm Hermann was born in 1942 in Munich. At a theater competition for young people, she met legendary director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who convinced her to quit her job as a secretary and work with him. In 1966, Hermann had her debut in Fassbinder's first short film, Der Stadtstreicher. Shortly thereafter, both took part in creating the Action Theater (later called anti-theater) in Munich. There, Hermann was part of the ensemble and acted on stage for the first time.
From then on, Hermann was an important part of Fassbinder’s theater and film productions. She acted in 18 Fassbinder films, including Katzelmacher, Händler der vier Jahreszeiten, Angst essen Seele auf and Lili Marleen.
In 1975, Hermann struck out on her own and moved to Berlin, where she worked at the Freie Volksbühne and the Berliner Ensemble. She has starred in over 100 films, with directors such as Ulrike Ottinger, Werner Herzog, Hans W. Geißendörfer, Percy Adlon, Max Färberböck, and Christoph Schlingensief.
