Biography:
Helga Göring was born in Meißen on January 14, 1922. She studied at the Academy of Music and Theater in Dresden from 1938-40. In 1940 she made her theatrical debut in Bielefeld. Thereafter followed engagements in Frankfurt/Main and Hamburg and after the war in Stendal und Dresden.
Martin Hellberg discovered Göring for the screen in 1951 and she starred in his film Das verurteilte Dorf. From 1955 to 1962 she was a member of the DEFA Film Ensemble.
From the beginning Göring was destined to play mother roles. However within this typecast she was able to skillfully cover a full range of female characters, from women confronted with contemporary problems to historical figures, such as the writer Annette von Droste-Hülshoff and the artist Käthe Kollwitz.
Göring gave a remarkable performance in the title role of Joachim Kunert’s Die große Reise der Agathe Schweigert, based on a story by Anna Seghers. The same director cast Göring for parts in Das zweite Gleis, Das Schilfrohr, and Die Abenteuer des Werner Holt.
Helga Göring became even more popular in the late 1970s following her television appearances in several series and multi-part productions where she played the starring roles. Opposite Herbert Köfer she headed the cast of Rentner haben niemals Zeit (TV series, 1978).
She continued working in a variety of film and television productions until her death on October 3, 2010.
