The Pol Pot regime tried to erase 2000 years of Cambodian culture in order to begin writing history anew. Classical Khmer dances and art forms were forbidden, schools were destroyed, and teachers and students kidnapped and killed. After the fall of the regime, the School of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh was reopened in September 1980, with many of its pupils now orphans.
