Captain Jim Leslie, a US Air Force pilot, is stationed at a military base near the Russian border in Alaska. His interest in Brenda, the commander's daughter, causes him to run afoul of her fiancé, Senator Gordon Gray. As a result, Gray assigns Leslie and his friends Harris and Hestor to a dangerous task: they are sent out in a storm to check buoys designed to monitor Soviet submarines. When the men are forced to make a dangerous landing on an ice sheet, Harris is seriously injured. Even though they are in Soviet territory, the team must risk sending a radio call for help.
This film is an adaptation of a military novel Wolfgang Schreyer, whose books also served as the basis for the DEFA films Preludio 11 and Der Traum des Hauptmann Loy.
