Synopsis
This black-and-white documentary portrays the life of Wilhelm Pieck and his ascent from young working-class revolutionary to the first president of the GDR. Archival film, historical photos, and documents from the period between 1914 and 1945 trace the history of Germany during his lifetime.
The film’s commentary also illustrates contemporary Cold War rhetoric, especially against West German politicians, who are depicted as the henchmen of the American imperialists. Important themes include GDR citizens’ desire to rebuild, the reforms following 1945, and loyalty to Stalin and the Soviet people.
