Synopsis

Painter and graphic artist Helge Leiberg filmed real-life scenes in Dresden and subsequently employed them in his 1982 here comes the sun. Here, they are painted over with images of moving and changing simple forms and shapes in different colors or montaged with images of detailed paintings and  cut out heads and figures. The film experiment displays Leiberg’s typical color and form schemes and is layered with improvised sound and music collages. Leiberg, who was an active member of the Super 8 underground scene in East Germany, included his films in free jazz concerts or experimental dance performances.

The film is part of DEFA Film Library's DVD release Counter Images: GDR-Underground Films 1983-1989.

Commentary

“Leiberg embarks on a search for the interaction between painting and improvised music, tinkering with sound collages that juxtapose language and sounds (…) Leiberg works with real-life film sequences and uses his pictorial color and form vocabulary as a design element in the film. He primarily uses the resulting films in their capacity as a depot of moving light images in order to project them onto the bodies of dancers in performances.”   —Christoph Tannert, Gegenbilder
