When 13-year-old Bernd moves from Rostock to the little town of Fichtenhainigen, he lands in the difficult position of being the new kid at school. His cocky classmate Rolli warns him not to mess with the girls in the class and Bernd ends up with some new rivals in addition to a new friend, Doris.

Bernd is embarrassed in front of the others when he fails to complete a dare to jump off the 10 meter diving board; he decides that starting judo lessons with Doris' father is the best way to take his classmates down a peg or two. When his parents don't want him to start yet another hobby that he won't stick with, Bernd goes to judo anyways and gets caught up in a web of lies trying to cover it up.
