12th Annual GSA Film Series

October 1-3, 2015

At the 2015 GSA conference in Washington DC, our film series featured four short films, screened at the conference hotel on Thursday evening, Oct. 1, and Miss Butterfly at the Goethe-Institut Washington on Saturday evening, Oct. 3.

A poetic contemporary fairy tale, Miss Butterfly (Fräulein Schmetterling)—directed by Kurt Barthel, who co-wrote the script with Christa Wolf and Gerhard Wolf—was the first official experimental feature film made at the GDR's DEFA Studio. After the 11th Plenum, however, it was not approved for release and was not restored and screened in public until forty years later, in 2005.

This unique screening will be introduced by Professor Barton Byg, following a reception hosted by UMass German & Scandinavian Studies. To attend, RSVP starting in August: www.goetheinstitutwashington.eventbrite.com.

The four short films to be screened at the Crystal Gateway Marriott on Oct. 1 include:

7:00 - 7:50 pm:

  • Erich Fried: The Whole World Should Endure (GDR, 1988, dir. Roland Steiner, 30 min., color)
  • Do You Know Where Herr Kisch Is? (GDR/CSSR, 1985, dir. Eduard Schreiber, 19 min., color)

8:00 - 9:00 pm:

  • Even Today He'd Speak His Mind (GDR, 1975, dir. Volker Koepp, 34 min., b&w)
  • Ernst Barlach: Mystic of Modernity (Germany, 2006, dir. Bernd Boehm, 26 min., color/b&w)

Look for location details here and in the conference catalogue in September.
