THE LUTZ DAMMBECK ARCHIVE: ART, POWER, AVANTGARDE JUST ARRIVED

Since 2019, the DEFA Film Library has distributed eighteen media collages, documentaries, and animation films by award-winning German painter, graphic and media artist, filmmaker and producer Lutz Dammbeck. We just acquired an outstanding archive from the director that includes filmed interviews, transcriptions of those interviews, and original art posters. This archive will complement our holdings of the entire Lutz Dammbeck cinematic oeuvre.

The new archive that will become part of our Lutz Dammbeck Collection includes:

34 Interviews and other materials for three documentaries by Lutz Dammbeck

In the 1990s, Dammbeck conducted 34 extensive filmed interviews for three full-length documentaries: Das Meisterspiel (The Master Game, 1998), Dürers Erben (Dürer’s Heirs, 1996), and Zeit der Götter (Time of the Gods, 1992). The full interviews are available on 16mm prints for researchers. The collection also includes digital documentation of full transcriptions, introductions, biographies, production information, and original theatrical distribution posters.

Among the interviewees are important intellectuals and public figures in Australia and Germany, e.g. (East) German painters Bernhard Heisig, Wolfgang Mattheuer, and Werner Tübke, (West) German philosopher Ernst Jünger, Austrian painter Arnulf Reiner, and (west) German art collector Peter Lugwig.

21 posters of the GDR Avantgarde 1976-1986, designed by Lutz Dammbeck

An influential voice in the East German alternative art scene in the late 1979s-80s, Dammbeck organized groundbreaking exhibitions, performed multi-media collages, and created graphic works. He designed posters in different formats and techniques for film screenings, exhibitions, and multi-media events, which were printed in limited editions and exist only as original screen prints, photo collages, or lithographs. They are rare examples for marketing alternative art events in East Germany.
