The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) created the Grants for Professional Development in Teaching program to support one of the central goals of the Periodic Multi-Year Review (PMYR) policy—to provide tenured faculty with opportunities for continuing professional development.
The program provides Associate and Full Professors with grants of up to $3,000 to engage in projects that will enhance their teaching effectiveness. These grants are separate from any PMYR funds faculty members may receive from their college.
PMYR Grants for Professional Development in Teaching can be used for a variety of activities and approaches. These might include but are not limited to:
- Enhancing content or pedagogical knowledge, including attending conferences or purchasing resources to benefit from the latest content knowledge and pedagogy in the faculty member's discipline
- Infusing diversity and multiculturalism into teaching
- Adopting new approaches to assess teaching and student learning
- Integrating teaching strategies that encourage active learning
- Learning to use instructional technologies in face-to-face, blended, or online courses
- Other professional development initiatives that support the teaching mission of the University.
Faculty members who successfully completed the PMYR process or were promoted to full professor during the 2019-2020 academic year are eligible to apply for funds. People who will retire during or before January 2020–January 2021 funding period are not eligible.
The funding period will begin in December 2019 and ends December 2020.
Each awardee will be expected to:
- Participate in an intake session at the start of the grant period
- Complete a report and brief survey of program effectiveness following the conclusion of the grant cycle (December 2020).
CTL welcomes proposals for a wide range of teaching development activities. CTL staff members are available to consult with grant applicants as they prepare proposals.
The following expenditures (among others) may be included in the budget request:
- Retreats, workshops or planning sessions
- Facilitator or consultant honorarium
- Materials, supplies, and meals
- Student support
- Travel to enhance pedagogical content knowledge.
Note: Grants cannot be taken as additional compensation.
Please single-space your proposal and use a standard 12-point font. Proposals may be a maximum of two pages, inclusive of budget, and must address the following:
- Goals of the project—Indicate how the proposal relates to the enhancement of teaching and student learning, and what the specific outcomes of the project will be.
- Project design and implementation—Describe the general approach by which the project will meet its stated goals. Be specific about what the project will entail.
- Project timeline—Provide an anticipated timeline.
- Evaluation of impact—Describe how you will determine whether you have reached your teaching and learning outcomes.
- Detailed budget—Provide a line-item budget with justification.
Proposals must be submitted directly to the Center for Teaching and Learning on or before November 8, 2019, at 5:00 PM EST.
All applications will be reviewed by a committee of faculty and CTL staff. The criteria by which proposals will be evaluated include:
- Clarity of goals, design, and implementation
- Potential impact of project outcomes on professional development in teaching and/or student learning
- Reasonableness of the budget.
Notification of awards will be made in December 2019. Grant recipients may request additional individual consultations from CTL staff throughout the grant period.
