D3. Provide multiple mechanisms to ask questions anonymously and receive feedback during class.
Anonymous feedback encourages participation especially from those who might not feel comfortable speaking up and reduces the likelihood that students will judge each other's opinions. Like participation, anonymous feedback encourages engagement which helps students become more invested in the material. For instructors formative feedback provides insights about how to adjust instruction based what students are understanding and what areas need more clarification.
Example and Strategies
- iClicker, Zoom polling and Google Q and A features provide instant, anonymous feedback during live synchronous classes.
- Embedding student learning questions in H5P via Moodle is a useful tool for asynchronous classes.
- Word clouds can be used for answering class discussion questions, allowing for anonymous participation and the identification in a visual mode.
- Using form or survey tools such as Google Forms, Qualtrics, or LMS surveys can rapidly gather short answer or multiple-choice information even in synchronous classes in person and live online classes.
- An Exit Ticket or Minute Paper is a quick way to gather feedback at the end of class by asking two questions: What are the most significant things learned during this session? What questions remain on your mind? Providing whole class feedback rather than individual feedback can help individual students see that others share their questions.
