B3. Connect course content to career opportunities/goals and increase awareness of and encourage participation in HIPS by students from minoritized groups.
High impact practices [HIPS] include participation in internships and career preparation as well as study abroad, community service or volunteer work, field experiences and practica (in addition to internships), culminating senior experiences as well as first year seminars, collaborative assignments, writing intensive courses, learning communities and eportfolios (see AACU High-Impact Practices | AAC&U). All of these practices have the potential to support belonging.
Strategies & Examples
- Some departments include a required first year seminar which typically introduces students to the major, provides general information on career options and university resources.
- Individual courses can include a community service component. CESL offers many resources for faculty interested in exploring civic engagement and service learning. Instructors can also encourage students to explore specific activities available through CESL by discussing how these experiences could support future career choices and opportunities.
- As appropriate to the specific content of a course an instructor might ask students within the major who have participated in an internship or a study abroad experience to speak to their classmates about their experiences.
