University Health Services COVID-19 Guidelines
From the beginning of the Novel Coronavirus 2019 outbreak, University Health Services has worked closely with UMass Amherst leadership to coordinate our response to this rapidly evolving situation. We are involved in extensive contingency planning for the public health impact of COVID-19 on our campus. This is an evolving situation and related updates are also available from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including updated Travel Notices for countries with community transmission.
- UHS is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. Before coming to the building for appointments or care, please call UHS at 413-577-5000.
- Telehealth appointments are available for all UHS patients - both on-campus and off-campus. Call 413-577-5000 to make an appointment for a phone consult with a UHS provider.
- Our pharmacy is open, offering limited services Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Please call ahead with your inquiry at 413-577-5030. If you need prescriptions transferred from UHS pharmacy to your local pharmacy, have your local pharmacy call us at 413-577-5030. All pharmacy orders must be received by 3:30 p.m.
- Adult physicals and travel medicine appointments are cancelled until further notice.
- If you have any reason to believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19, or if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, please stay where you are and call the UHS Triage Nurse at 413-577-5229 for guidance.
Symptoms of COVID-19:
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Muscle pain
- Sore throat
- New loss of taste or smell
- Other less common symptoms have been reported, including gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
The Importance of Social Distancing
Social distancing is a tool experts recommend to slow the spread of a disease passing from person to person. Simply put, it means that people stay far enough away from each other so that the coronavirus cannot spread from one person to another. Social distancing, combined with the use of face coverings and frequent hand washing, is the best way for each of us to do our part to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Social Distancing Means...
- Staying home as much as possible
- Talking on the phone instead of meeting up in person
- Keeping 6 feet away from others
- Avoiding public transportation
- Limiting travel
- Working from home if you can
- Skipping social gatherings, crowded bars, sporting events, etc.
- Disinfecting surfaces frequently
- Not touching others, including handshakes
- Not sharing items you've touched
- Following guidelines for effective hand washing
Use of Face Coverings
Face coverings are required to be worn in university buildings whenever social distancing is not possible. Face coverings are required to be worn outdoors when you are unable to maintain six feet of social distancing. For more information, please read our Face Coverings FAQ.
Health Smart Behaviors
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (minimum 60% alcohol).
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
- Practice social distancing; keep at least 6 feet away from others.
- Stay home when you are sick and keep 6 feet away from others.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash; or cover your mouth/nose with your elbow.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Don’t share items such as food, drinks, utensils, vapes, or similar items.
UHS COVID-19 Precautions & Diagnostic Testing
- Since spring break, UHS has continued to provide medical care to patients. Before entering the building, patients are required to call ahead for screening by a health care provider to determine how UHS can best meet the patient’s needs. Providers are on call to address a wide variety of health concerns over the phone. Patients who need to be seen at UHS are screened before entering the building for possible COVID-19 symptoms and exposure.
- UHS has designated a separate respiratory clinic, including an outdoor testing tent, where patients with respiratory symptoms are seen by clinical staff in full personal protective equipment (PPE). Testing of patients with respiratory symptoms is conducted outdoors, either in the testing tent or with the patient sitting in their own car.
- UHS has been able to meet the testing needs of what has been a significantly reduced campus community. As the university evaluates options for the fall semester, UHS will be a key planning partner in determining testing capabilities and protocols.
Center for Counseling and Psychological Health (CCPH)
Effective Monday, March 16 through the end of the spring semester:
- CCPH will provide mental health services by telephone: 413-545-2337.
- Routine psychotherapy and psychiatry appointments for existing clients will be conducted by phone. Your provider will call you at your scheduled appointment time. (Please be sure your contact number is updated in SPIRE.) Students already scheduled for psychiatry intakes will be assessed by phone and a plan will be made to best meet your needs.
- Psychotherapy groups and workshops will be temporarily suspended for this semester. Group and workshop participants with questions may reach out to their group facilitator via the Medicat Patient Portal or by phone.
- CCPH remains available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days a year for mental health emergencies:
- In a life-threatening situation, call 911.
- For non-life threatening situations call 877-831-7421 and ask to speak to the on-call clinician.
- At this time, CCPH is temporarily not accepting new clients for psychotherapy or psychiatry. We anticipate being able to offer adapted services soon, so please check back with us in the coming weeks for more information.
