UMass Amherst requires vaccination of all faculty, staff and students, following CDC guidance designed to allow universities to operate at full capacity for in-person learning. Given our vaccination requirements, testing data comes largely from individuals choosing to be tested and a limited number with vaccination exemptions who must test regularly. The reported positivity rate is likely higher within this self-reporting group compared to the full campus population.

Assessing the Data
As the fall semester unfolds, the university’s COVID-19 Implementation Group, PHPC, the Emergency Operations Team and other campus partners will continuously monitor public health conditions and will modify COVID-19 mitigation measures accordingly. A variety of considerations will be factored into decision making, including current positive case numbers, outcomes and severity of cases and trends, state and federal guidance, and the campus’ continuing ability to manage contact tracing, quarantine and isolation through the pandemic. As always, public health measures will meet or exceed state and federal COVID-19 guidelines.
