Barry Spence

As a comparatist working at the intersection of several disciplines, Barry Spence’s research interests include film theory, cinema and intermediality—especially as concerns the relationship between film, theater, and painting – narratology, European art cinema, modernism, the work of Samuel Beckett and James Joyce, as well as ancient Greek tragedy and Homeric Epic. He is a two-time recipient of a Five College Innovative Language Learning Mellon grant focused on developing resources for learning Homeric Greek. Having spent over fifteen years as a professional book and paper conservator and book artist, he has a strong interest in the history of the codex. He is the undergraduate program director and chief undergraduate advisor in the Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies. He has published articles on Samuel Beckett and recently coauthored the article “Narrative Time” in the Oxford Encyclopedia of Literary Theory.
