Alumni Career Night 2017

Nine graduates of the Communication program at UMass Amherst returned to campus on October 19, 2017, to offer career guidance to current students. These alumni, representing Comm graduates from four different decades, convened in the Communication Hub on the third floor of the ILC and shared their career paths and journeys with a packed room of Comm majors. We invite you to learn more about these terrific alums who so generously provided career counseling and support to our students:

 

Lee FelixLee Felix '14

Lee double majored in Communication and BDIC with a concentration in Fashion Merchandising. She currently works as a Business Account Manager for Wayfair LLC. During her time at UMass Amherst, Lee was the President of Soul TV and a member of the Black Mass Communication Project. Lee also interned and worked for various fashion designers and fashion shows, including Fashion Week New York. Lee is in the process of starting her own company that will design and produce events for the fashion and entertainment industries.  

Danielle HechtDanielle Hecht '15

Danielle was a Communication Peer Advisor and member of the Minuteman Marching Band during her time at UMass Amherst. After graduation, she moved to NYC to obtain her Masters degree in Writing & Producing for Television from Long Island University. While in grad school, she interned in the entertainment industry at various documentary film, television, and commercial production companies.  She currently works as a Production Coordinator for Lively Group, a post-production advertising agency in Manhattan that focuses on animation and digital design..

George LentzGeorge Lentz '91

George is Senior Vice President of Scheduling, Acquisitions, and Operations for AMC Networks. He has 26 years’ worth of production, scheduling, and programming acquisitions experience. He has worked at AMC, Bravo, Sundance Channel and IFC, four of the leading brands in television programming today. As the head of Scheduling and Film Acquisitions at AMCN for the past 16 years, he has attended numerous film festivals and film premieres the world over, negotiated more than $500 million in film licensing and television series agreements, and played key roles in his company’s acquisition of major assets. He was nominated for a primetime Emmy Award in 2011 as an Executive Producer for Outstanding Non-fiction Series with Monty Python: Almost the Truth (the Lawyer’s Cut).

Jamie ManningJamie Manning '13

Jamie has utilized her Communication degree in a variety of industries including law, business, and higher education. After working as an immigration paralegal for several years, Jamie transitioned into the marketing and communications field. She served as a Sales and Marketing Assistant for a promotional products company and now serves as the Communications Specialist for the Office of Undergraduate Admission at Elms College in Chicopee, MA. Jamie is also pursuing a Master of Business Administration in Management at Elms College..

Meghan OresteMeghan (LaTour) Oreste '97

Meghan worked for more than 15 years in marketing and PR for the healthcare industry. In 2004, she opened her own consulting firm that specialized in introducing ground breaking medical technologies. In recent years she helped clients launch the first non-drug asthma treatment, new COPD interventions, and allergy treatments. In 2014 Meghan graduated from law school and went into private practice with a focus on healthcare law, real estate, and criminal appeals. She has been a board member and passionate supporter of the Life is Good Kids Foundation since 2009..

Roderick OresteRoderick S. Oreste '98

Roderick is founder and principal attorney of Oreste Law. Before opening his practice in 2010, Rod spent more than 12 years working for the Boston Red Sox in the Public Affairs department. He co-authored the book Red Sox Legends and has written numerous articles for publications such as Red Sox Magazine. At Oreste Law, Rod focuses his practice on real estate, family law, and criminal defense.

Dwayne SmithDwayne Smith '15

Dwayne has been providing solutions for IT, retail, and bio-pharma companies throughout the country as a corporate recruiter. He has worked with Fortune 500 companies such as Dell EMC, Samsung, Macy's, and Shire and is currently Provider Enrollment Coordinator for Maximus, a Medicaid company ensuring MassHealth physicians can continue to offer subsidized healthcare. He hopes to pair his Communication degree with a Computer Information Science degree to provide affordable IT support solutions to small businesses.

Jeremy SmithJeremy Smith '94

Jeremy is the Digital Projects Manager in Scholarly Communication and the Communication Department Liaison at the UMass Amherst Libraries. His previous position was as the manager of a grant-funded project to digitize the entire W.E.B. Du Bois manuscript collection, housed in the UMass Library Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA). Prior to acquiring his Masters in Library Science degree in 2009, he was a staff producer and editor for the Media Education Foundation, a Northampton-based non-profit video production company founded by Communication Professor Sut Jhally.

 

Andy Tamulynas '05

Andy has spent the past 12 years in the music industry working in a variety of marketing and product-focused roles. Beginning his post-UMass career in Digital Media at Vic Firth Company, Andy generated social brand advocacy through video marketing material and engagement campaigns. In his current role as Category Manager of Drumsticks and Mallets for Avedis Zildjian Company, his responsibilities include research and development, marketing, and promotions for the Vic Firth and Zildjian Drumstick brands. Andy is an alumnus of the Minuteman Marching Band and worked as a photographer for the Massachusetts Daily Collegian while at UMass Amherst.
