Professor Roopali Mukherjee comes to us from the Department of Media Studies at Queens College, CUNY, where she was Professor of Media. A critical race scholar, she analyzes the power of race and racialization as cultural knowledge and examines how discourses of race and racialization shape and are shaped by media cultures and the dynamics of social power.
Professor Mukherjee’s current work looks at the “branded self”, within the context of racial histories and late-stage capitalism. She is the author of two books, The Blacking Factory: Brand Culture and the Technologies of the Racial Self and The Racial Order of Things: Cultural Imaginaries of the Post-Soul Era. She will be teaching graduate and undergraduate courses about Blackness in public culture, African Americans in US film and media, and the linkages between racial capitalism and media cultures.
Welcome Roopali Mukherjee!
