2023 Deadline: April 21, 2023
This internship funding opportunity is made available through the generous donation of Elaine E. Nord '81, a UMass Amherst alumna who majored in Communication. It is designed to help offset expenses related to a Communication major's unpaid summer internship in production or creative communications.
Eligibility
Any Communication undergraduate who plans to take part in a for-credit summer internship in the mass communication field and has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 is eligible to apply for this internship funding.* The internship must take place during the summer, and the awardee must be enrolled in internship practicum credits (typically, UMass 298 credits) during that session. Applicants who do not have Communication as a primary or secondary major will not be considered. Applicants are not required to be on financial aid to be eligible.
*Note: Students who are graduating in Spring 2023 are NOT eligible for this award.
Selection
After the application deadline, the Department of Communication’s Undergraduate Studies Committee, chaired by the Undergraduate Program Director, will recommend a recipient to the Department Chair for approval. The committee will consider each applicant's academic standing, described internship, personal/professional goals for the internship, and anticipated expenses related to the internship. Preference will be given to students whose work will focus on the use of technology to create media content, documentary or other forms of video production, or the field of photography. All applicants will be notified of the internship funding committee’s decision by email soon after the April 21 deadline.
The recipients of this award will:
- Write a thank-you letter to Elaine Nord upon return from the internship.
- Perhaps meet with Elaine Nord during the fall semester following the internship.
