Process to Become a Communication Major for Current Students

All students in good academic standing may join the Communication major. Students are encouraged to take at least one Comm 100-level intro course prior to joining the major in order to be more familiar with the content of the major.  Comm 100-levels are open to non-majors, so there is no need to wait to try one!

Students must meet with a Peer Advisor to fill out an interest form to declare the major.  Just drop by the Peer Advising office in ILC N323 during the academic year (Fall or Spring semester).

Fall 2024 Peer Advising Hours:

Monday, 9am-3pm

Tuesday, 1-3pm

Wednesday, 10am-4pm

Thursday, 12-2pm

Students with a GPA below 2.3 who want to join the Comm major must meet with Director of Undergraduate Advising Marianne Neal-Joyce to develop a plan for academic improvement.

Prospective First-Year and Transfer Students Applying to UMass Amherst

Prospective first-year and transfer students may apply to the Communication major when applying to UMass Amherst. If accepted to UMass Amherst and the major, they are admitted directly into the Communication major upon entering the university. Students who are accepted to the university but not to the Communication major may join the major by following the procedure for current UMass Amherst students once they are in their first semester.
