Bio

Mary is a Ph.D. candidate (ABD) in the Department of Communication at UMass Amherst. They have M.A. in Women's and Gender Studies and B.A.'s in Psychology, Sociology, and Philosophy from the University of South Florida. Their research explores the relationship between language, thought and reality. Specifically, how bodies are constructed, surveilled, and disciplined toward neoliberal ends by examining the techniques used to maintain and reproduce normative embodiment boundaries. Their disseration examines the discursive struggle to define “sex” and “gender” as conceptual categories in U.S. law.
