  • When is the virtual Commencement Celebration scheduled? 

    The Undergraduate Commencement Celebration is scheduled for May 8, at 4:30 p.m. We look forward to celebrating with you! 
  • What is planned for the virtual celebration? 

    During the 15-minute streaming video celebration, Chancellor Subbaswamy will lead us through a tribute that honors the graduating class.

    Featured speakers include UMass President Marty Meehan; the 2020 student speaker, Grace Jung, a biochemistry and molecular biology major from Wakefield, Massachusetts; and the keynote speaker for our on-campus ceremony, UMass alumnus John Jacobs ’90, co-founder and chief creative optimist of Life Is Good. Other plans include musical performances and some very special surprise guests. 
  • Are the schools and colleges also doing virtual events? 

    Yes, the schools and colleges will be sharing video tributes and celebrating our graduates on their websites, starting with Commonwealth Honors College on May 7, and the rest of the schools and colleges on May 8. 
  • How do I view the virtual celebration? 

    The event will be posted for viewing on May 8, at 4:30 p.m. You can access the virtual celebration on our website (
  • Will the virtual celebration be viewable if I can't see it at the scheduled time? 

    Yes, the video will be available after the event.  
  • Do I need a cap and gown for the virtual celebration? 

    No! But if you wear one, then send us a pic using #umasstogether or #umass2020.

  • When will the in-person Commencement Ceremony be rescheduled? 

    A campus commencement will be rescheduled for an appropriate date, after restrictions on large gatherings are lifted.
