Prepared Remarks by Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy
149th Undergraduate Commencement of the University of Massachusetts Amherst

Congratulations to the Class of 2019!

You wrote the final papers. Submitted the projects. Took the exams.

Today, you enjoy the success of completing one of the most important challenges of your life.

But we call this celebration your “commencement” – your beginning – with good reason.

Think back to your first semester on campus. Finding your way to classes. Negotiating life with a roommate. Taking that course you think might change your life.

Today, you remember that earlier version of yourself, but you are forever changed.

Each semester, your successes and your setbacks shaped you, making you stronger, more resilient, and more prepared.

Today, you are ready to begin your life as an alumnus of the university. In the years ahead, with each new challenge you encounter, whether personal or professional, you will be ready to make the right choices, and I speak on behalf of all my colleagues when I say it has been a privilege to participate in your intellectual and personal growth.

I know you will also be strong ambassadors of the university, setting an example by living our institutional values. You understand the strength of individuality is best served when it values the perspectives of a diverse community. That integrity and compassion are not optional.  And of course, that we always pursue the truth, regardless of the cacophony of voices that may seek to lead us astray.

You are, indeed, ready to commence an exciting new phase of your life.

As you make your way in the world, I ask that you keep the university in your life. Be an active alum wherever you live. And come back and visit often. We will always welcome you warmly back to where you began.

Congratulations Class of 2019! And GO UMASS!
