Commonwealth Honors College Celebration of Excellence
Mullins Center, University of Massachusetts Amherst
Thursday, May 9, 2019
Welcome to all the family and friends who join us this evening.
And congratulations to the Commonwealth Honors College Class of 2019!
This evening, in presenting you with your gold stole, we acknowledge that each one of you has successfully met the academic rigors of the university and the Honors College. You have written theses. Completed capstone projects. Participated in innovative and groundbreaking research. Published in academic journals. And received prestigious and highly national competitive awards.
You have among you a Churchill Scholarship Recipient – one of only 15 in the country; a Luce Scholarship National Finalist; a ThinkSwiss Scholarship Recipient, and three Fulbright Scholars.
Eleven of you were named Rising Researchers for demonstrated leadership and impact in your field of study.
And tomorrow, at your undergraduate commencement ceremony, seven of you will be recognized with a 21st Century Leaders Award – in recognition of your exemplary academic achievement and contributions to the campus community.
Your accomplishments and your contributions to the university are significant and at the commencement ceremony, your gold stole will be a visual representation of this success.
As you prepare to leave us and make your way in the world, I ask that you always carry with you the essence of your gold stole. Always remember the commitment to excellence, intellectual exploration and pursuit of the truth that brought you here this evening. Remember the belief we had in you, and your ability to succeed. Remember the belief you had in yourself and the success you achieved.
I thank all of you for your contributions to the university and know you will continue to carry a commitment to excellence with you.
Congratulations! And GO UMASS!
