Navigating Senioritis
by Piper Destiny '26
For me and many others, this marks the start of our last semester as an undergraduate at UMass. Some may have completed their studies last semester and are getting a few months of respite before we graduate in May. No matter where you are in your graduation journey, there is a sensation that can often creep up on those finishing a degree.
Activities once part of a normal routine during the winter and the preceding months may become harder to stay on top of. From going to class and completing homework, to even seeing your friends and participating in your favorite hobbies. This on top of the looming wonder of what awaits you after graduation can lead to a sensation known as Senioritis.
Senoritis can leave many enveloped with feelings such as nostalgia and excitement, while also feelings of guilt when you experience demotivation. It is incredibly important that if this feeling washes over you, you don’t blame yourself for it. With this winter season upon us for a few months longer there is an abundance of anticipation swirling through brisk air, and fatigue as well.
If you are worried about burnout, a lack of motivation, and exhaustion from your senior year, consider appreciating all that you have overcome to get to this moment. Many seniors have been pursuing their degree for 4 or more years, not to mention the 12 years of primary and secondary school prior. That is 16 years of school that you have persevered through that you deserve to acknowledge.
Remember why you’re here. What has motivated and supported you to this day? My recommendation is to channel this sentiment as much as you can.
The days are getting longer; the temperature will elevate and sooner than you know, you will start to see the horizon of your final day here. Until then, do not be afraid to lean on your community around you; your peers, instructors and loved ones, as we navigate this everchanging period of time together.
The finish line is in sight, and you are steadily making your way to the end of a rigorous chapter. You have worked tirelessly through exams you crammed for, and essays you wrote. Take this moment to celebrate your accomplishments and bask in every second of your own enjoyment.
