The Classics & Philosophy Concentration is for students wishing to study ancient Greek philosophy in the original language as well as the influence of ancient philosophy on modern thought. This concentration has been developed in cooperation with the UMass Department of Philosophy.


A. Prerequisites: students must complete Greek through the 200-level. (min. 12 credits)


Greek 126 (Intensive Elementary Classical Greek) or equivalent (e.g. Greek 112 sequence)
Greek 246 (Intensive Intermediate Classical Greek) or equivalent (e.g. Greek 242 sequence)


B. Required language component, 300-level: students must take both. (min. 6 credits)

C. Required language component, 400-level: students must take two. (min. 6 credits)

Substitutions of upper-level Greek courses in other authors may be allowable, as may be courses
in advanced Latin (such as Lucretius, Cicero, or Seneca) if those classes can be demonstrated to
focus on or contain substantial content related to Greek philosophy. Please check with the classics
