William M. Bulger Award

The department’s most prestigous award, given annually to our outstanding undergraduate majors as selected by the faculty. The Bulger Award ceremony takes place during the fall semester.


Tyler Rowland Prizes for Greek and Latin Sight-Translation

Prizes are awarded each spring for the best translations at the sight of a passage of Greek and a passage of Latin. Students may take one or both of the sight-translation exams. The contest is open to all undergraduate students taking any level of Greek or Latin. The awards are presented at the departmental honors ceremony in the spring semester.


The Department of Classics Prizes for Excellence in Intensive Latin and Greek

Awarded each year to the outstanding undergraduate student in the intensive Greek sequence and the outstanding undergraduate student in the intensive Latin sequence (Latin 126 and 126; Greek 126 and 246). To qualify, students must have been enrolled in the 126 level at UMass Amherst before taking the 246 level. The awards are presented at the departmental honors ceremony in the Spring semester.


Jill Letteney Book Prize

Funded by the generosity of alumna Jill Letteney, this prize is given for the best essay by an undergraduate classics major describing the discipline-related books a student wishes to add to their collection. The awards are presented at the departmental honors ceremony in the spring semester.


David F. Grose Travel Fellowships

Awarded annually to undergraduate students of classics to help defray the cost of summer travel and study related to classical antiquity. To apply, please inquire with the department office, 413-545-0512.


Eta Sigma Phi

The UMass Amherst Department of Classics hosts the Epsilon Omicron chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the national classics honor society. Invitations for membership are extended to students based on excellent performance in a Greek or Latin course, and an initiation ceremony and reception are held in the Spring semester.
