An internship can be a valuable addition to the study of classics at UMass Amherst. An internship can enable classics students to apply skills they have learned and gain new ones, explore career possibilities, and discover relationships between their interests in the ancient world and the world of work in many fields and different settings. Museums, non-profits, educational institutions, government agencies, and publishers are some possible places for classics students to find internships, but beyond these, a wide array of businesses say that they are interested in the skills classics students possess when they are looking for interns.
It may be possible to earn academic credit for an internship that can count towards the requirements of the classics major. Where appropriate, up to the three internship credits can be counted towards the major, depending on a student’s development of an academic contract with a faculty advisor within the department. To discuss how an internship could fit into your academic plan, contact the undergraduate program director. Starting September 2, 2024, the UPD will be Professor Shannon hogue (shogue@umass.edu).
For information about finding an internship, students are encouraged to access the resources of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts Advising and Career Center (E-202 South College). Their website makes it easy to search for internships and access other information. The HFA Summer Internship Assistance Fund can help students with the financial burden of performing an unpaid internship.
