After nearly 25 years since their CIE days, David McCurry, Bonnie Mullinix, Rob and Toon Fuderich and Jane Benbow gathered on Mother's Day weekend (May 6-8, 2022) in Beaufort, SC to spend a wonderful 2.5 days together. Rob and Toon were visiting this wonderful coastal community and suggested a meet-up. Bonnie and Dave traveled down from Greenville, SC and Jane from Raleigh, NC, their respective homes.
In addition to just hanging out, reminiscing, and enjoying the downtown area and wonderful weather, they visited the nearby historic Penn Center on St. Helena Island: an important community focal point for the education of emancipated slaves in the 19th century, the civil rights movement in SC, and now cultural and history center for Gullah/Geechee culture.
While there they visited the small secluded house on the Penn Center grounds where the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stayed and collaborated with colleagues and leaders during the civil rights movement and where he worked on his "I have a dream" speech.
Most of the time was spent hearing about the amazing work and contributions each of us has made, sharing family updates, and of course relaxing under the Spanish moss-draped trees, cooking and going out to eat great food. Nothing beats spending time and catching up with CIE colleagues and good friends!
