A celebratory gathering was organized in early November at Mill River Park in Amherst (site of many CIE spring picnics) to honor BGW on her retirement and to thank DRE and Gretchen for their years of work with Afghan students at CIE.

In attendance were Habibullah Wajdi, who graduated in 2013, and current doctoral students, Hassan Aslami, Sayed Javid Mussawy, and Mujtaba Hedayet. All four have been extensively involved in leadership roles in Kabul and integral partners in the three higher education programs managed by CIE in Afghanistan and within the Center.

The gathering, properly masked (except for pictures) and socially-distanced, was also attended by the wives and children of the four Afghans.  The wives provided a delightful Afghan meal and the children enjoyed the playground.

In a solemn moment, Wajdi offered an Islamic prayer in memory of Zia Andar whose untimely passing occurred several days earlier. Zia was a friend, classmate and colleague of all who were there.

After enjoying the meal BGW, DRE and Gretchen were formally honored with statements of appreciation and gifts.  The gathering ended with statements of optimism for the future of education in Afghanistan, the Center’s contribution to that future and hope that the College of Education/CIE will be the home for future Afghan students.
