Degrees Earned in the 2018-2019 Academic Year

At the end of each academic year it is time to pause and celebrate the accomplishments of students associated with CIE who have completed their degrees during the academic year. This year graduates were awarded five doctoral degrees and two Education Specialist degrees.  They represent a variety of countries including Bangladesh, Georgia, Nigeria and the USA.

Debutant INGO’s Participating in Guatemala’s National Reading Program – Jacob Carter

This study examines how international NGOs are participating in the Leamos Juntos reading program in Guatemala and what factors affect their participation. Guatemala is a multiethnic country where over 24 indigenous languages (Maya, Xinca and Garifuna) are spoken along with Spanish. Central to understanding the dynamics of NGOs working in Guatemala is their historical relationship to the State.

As it has for many years, CIE organized a reception at the annual CIES conference, held in San Francisco this year. There were nearly fifty CIE graduates, current students and faculty members on the CIES program this year.  Also in attendance were some of the CIE graduates who live in the San Francisco area..

CIE and the International Education program at UMass were represented by nearly 50 graduates, current students, and faculty members at the national CIES conference in San Francisco in April, 2019.  In addition there were faculty members and students from the Higher Education and other programs in the UMass Amherst College of Education at the conference.

Four UMass, Amherst faculty, Chrystal George Mwangi (principal investigator), Sangeeta Kamat, Jonique Childs and Enobong Branch, were recently awarded a grant through Worldwide University Network (WUN) to conduct an international study on “Researching Diversity, Inclusion and Student Success: Towards a Global Campus Climate.”
