CIE Retreat 2015

CIE members (Click on picture to see larger version) gathered for the annual retreat at Angel’s Rest in the foothills of the Berkshires for two days in October. This year the retreat had two themes: living and working in another culture, and setting goals for one’s career.

Since the majority of CIE students are from other countries, the discussion about living in another culture was lively and full of both serious and humorous anecdotes. US students shared their experiences from living and working in other cultures as well.

The second theme focused on identifying personal, academic and professional goals and exploring alternate career paths.  Through a series of activities, participants first worked on articulating their goals.  Small groups discussed alternative professional paths leading to academic employment, working for NGO’s or working as an independent consultant.  Each person then drew a “road map” of a possible path from the present to the goals that they had articulated. Maps were posted on the wall and shared with much discussion.  Subsequent sessions focused on activities and resources to seek out while in graduate school that would help move them toward possible goals.
