My work focuses on leadership, organizational development, and policy analysis in tertiary education. Much of my early work focused on the impact of organizational structures and public policies student access and success in Joe Bergerthe United States domestic context; but my efforts in recent years have been concentrated on the development of higher education throughout the world.  As a result, I have the privilege of being able to work on projects related to policy, organizational and leadership development in a variety of international settings – including Malawi, Afghanistan, northwest China, Egypt, Russia, and Palestine.

After 15 years at UMass I have moved on to the position of Dean of the College of Education at UMass Boston.  However, I retain an association with CIE and am involved with CIE projects. I have authored dozens of journal articles, book chapters, and research reports and served on the editorial boards of journals such as International Education Research, Research in Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, and Journal of College Student Retention.  My work has been funded by agencies and foundations such as the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, National Science Foundation (NSF), Fund for the Improvement of Higher Education (FIPSE) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID).  Previously, I also taught at the University of New Orleans, my first academic position after earning my Ph.D. in education and human development from Vanderbilt University in 1997.
