Endang Sumantri is retired and is Professor Emeritus at the Indonesia University of Education (UPI, formerly IKIP Bandung), where he served as Senate Chairman from 2006 to 2011.
Endang and his family came to Amherst for a visit in October 2016. He was happy to be back on campus after so many years—he completed his Master’s degree at CIE in 1980 and his doctorate in 1988. During his recent visit, he met with the interim Dean, toured the new College of Education facilities and reunited with DRE, who was the chair of his dissertation committee.
After his time at CIE in the ‘80s, Endang returned to Indonesia as Vice-Rector of the Institute of Teaching and Science Education (IKIP) Bandung from 1989 to 1995. He then became a national instructor for P4 training from 1995 to 1998. He pointed out that he was able to gain this position due to the topic of his doctoral dissertation at CIE, which was Citizenship training for steady national development: a case study of the P4 training program for the students of higher education in West Java, Indonesia.
Endang has had a long and illustrious career in Indonesia, in particular serving as professor and in various senior leadership positions at the University of Galuh and the Board of Education in his hometown of Ciamis. He also served as Senate Chairman of STPDN, the national institute of higher education for civil servants. [10/16]
